Redefining Leadership for the Next Generation of Women Changemakers

Leadership for a Changing World

The world is changing faster than ever. From the climate crisis and social inequality to rapid technological advancements, today's challenges call for leaders who are collaborative, compassionate, and driven by purpose. Young people are already stepping up to create meaningful change, yet many young women still don't see themselves reflected in traditional ideas of leadership. The reality is clear: according to UN Women, only 28 countries are currently led by women Heads of State or Government, and at the current pace, achieving gender equality in top leadership positions could take another 130 years. Beyond politics, women hold just 29% of C-suite positions, while barriers such as the "broken rung" continue to limit their progression into senior leadership, according to McKinsey's Women in the Workplace 2025 report.

But these statistics don't define what's possible; they remind us why investing in young women matters. When young women are given the space to discover their strengths, connect with like-minded changemakers, and lead in ways that are in ways that resonate with who they are, they become catalysts for lasting change. This is the vision that brought YOUTHTOPIA and Women Emerging together: to help redefine leadership for a new generation and empower more young women to realise that leadership is not about titles or positions but about the positive impact they create in their communities and beyond.

Our Partnership

Since 2023, YOUTHTOPIA and Women Emerging have partnered with a shared vision of empowering the next generation of women changemakers. While YOUTHTOPIA creates opportunities for young people to learn, connect, and take action on the issues they care about, Women Emerging is a global non-profit movement on a mission to reframe leading so that more women choose to lead. Recognising that traditional leadership models don't always reflect the ways women naturally lead, Women Emerging encourages women to discover their own approach to leading through exploration, self-awareness, and purpose, rather than through titles or hierarchy.

This shared vision led to the Leadership Expedition for Global Changemakers, a transformative journey for members of YOUTHTOPIA's Circle of Youth. Through Women Emerging's unique 4Es methodology: Essence, Elements, Expression, and Energy, participants were invited to explore their own leadership or discover their approach to leading, deepen their connections with fellow changemakers, and redefine leadership on their own terms. Following the success of the first edition, the partnership continues to nurture young women with the confidence, community, and mindset to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

The Expedition Journey

Unlike traditional leadership programmes that focus on skills and competencies, the Leadership Expedition invited participants to begin with something deeper: understanding themselves. Over five months, 24 members of YOUTHTOPIA's Circle of Youth embarked on a reflective journey guided by Women Emerging's signature 4Es methodology: Essence, Elements, Expression, and Energy, before bringing these together in their own approach to Leading. Through live conversations, guided reflections, journaling, creative exercises, and peer learning, the expedition created a safe space for participants to pause, reflect, and discover the leader they already are.

Each stage built on the last. Explorers explored their identity and values through Essence, reflected on the experiences that shaped them in Elements, found confidence in expressing their own voice through Expression, learned how to sustain themselves and others through Energy, and ultimately brought these insights together to define what leadership means to them in Leading. Rather than teaching a single model of leadership, the expedition empowered each Explorer to embrace a leadership style rooted in who they are, purpose, and meaningful impact.

Reflections & Impact

For the Women Emerging team, the expedition became more than a leadership programme, it became a space for mutual learning and discovery. See below some reflections from the Women Emerging Team.

The expedition also encouraged participants to reflect on their own leadership journeys. Through personal stories, they explored how their upbringing, education, identity, and lived experiences shaped the way they lead. Others reflected on balancing openness with healthy boundaries and discovering that leadership begins with knowing yourself. We invite you to explore these reflections through the Explorers' own words:

For YOUTHTOPIA, this partnership reinforces why creating opportunities for young women to grow as leaders is so important. Supporting women in leadership is not simply about increasing representation; it is about ensuring more voices, perspectives, and lived experiences shape the future. Together with Women Emerging, we hope this is only the beginning. We remain committed to creating more spaces where young women can discover their potential, build meaningful connections, and gain the confidence to lead positive change in their communities and beyond.

Looking Ahead

The challenges of our world demand bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and leaders who are willing to create change with courage and compassion. We believe that every young woman has the potential to lead, not because she holds a title, but because she has the power to make a difference in her community and beyond.

Together, YOUTHTOPIA and Women Emerging are committed to creating more spaces where young women can discover their voice, strengthen their confidence, and embrace leadership on their own terms. This expedition is only the beginning. Our hope is to continue reaching and empowering more women around the world, so they can inspire others, challenge the status quo, and become the changemakers our future needs.
