World Environment Day: Your Permission Slip to Be a Changemaker

Let’s be honest for a second—awareness days can feel a lot. Another hashtag. Another Instagram story. Another moment where everyone seems to care — until they scroll away and move on.

But World Environment Day on June 5? It hits differently. Because the planet isn't just "getting warmer." It's sending receipts. And we're not here to just watch it burn.

So, Why Do These Days Even Matter?

Youths don’t need a calendar alert to know climate change is real. We live it — weird weather, heatwaves that break records, oceans essentially running a fever. But what awareness days actually do is snap us out of the someone else will fix it mindset. They remind us: we’re the main characters now.

Melati Wijsen — the young activist from Bali who helped ban single-use plastics on her island when she was just 12 — put it perfectly:

“You're never too young to make a difference, and it's not too late to take action.”

She later launched YOUTHTOPIA to create a space where young people learn from each other how to spark real change. If you’re reading this? You’re already in the right place.

What’s Happening Right Now

The situation is serious:

  • Oceans under pressure. Coral bleaching isn’t just a sad image — it’s a warning that entire ecosystems are collapsing.
  • Plastic everywhere. Quite literally everywhere. Microplastics in our food, our water, our bodies.
  • Biodiversity in freefall. Species are disappearing at a rate 1,000 times faster than nature intended.

But here’s the plot twist: none of this is new news. Young people have been leading environmental movements for decades — demanding a seat at tables that were never built for them.

So why aren’t we there yet?
Because the system wasn’t designed for us. But that doesn’t mean we can’t redesign it.

Youth Energy: We’re Not Asking Anymore

Here’s something the older generations don’t always get: we’ve stopped asking for permission. We’re doing.

From the Pacific Climate Warriors to Fridays for Future, young people are showing up — not just with slogans, but with solutions. Melati and her sister Isabel didn’t wait for someone to hand them a plastic bag ban. They campaigned for six years, met with the governor, and made it happen.

Her advice?

“Be brave enough to start taking action today. Banning plastic bags should not have taken six years. So no more excuses, no more waiting for regulations and policies to be in place.”

That’s the energy we need.

Small Actions That Actually Make a Difference

Not planning to launch a global movement by tomorrow? That's fine. Start here. And don't just take our word for it — learn directly from our Circle of Youth (COYs) , who've turned these very habits into real-world impact.

  1. Rethink your consumption.

Fast fashion is out. Thrifting is the move. We already have enough clothing produced for the next 6 generations, and second-hand shopping saves up to 80% of emissions per item — vintage might look better too. Get inspired by the creative side of sustainability with the Thinking Outside The Box Masterclass, or see how one small habit can spark a big change through Towel Boy & Sustainable Fashion YOUTHTOPIA Talks.

  1. Ditch single-use habits.

A reusable bottle? Iconic. Bringing your own container for takeout? Main character behavior. It's not about being perfect — it's about being intentional. Need a roadmap? 1. Use your voice — with skills.

Melati once admitted that when a young kid asked her, "What can I do to be like you?" — all she could say at first was "Use your voice." But she realized that wasn't enough. So she built YOUTHTOPIA to give young people real tools: public speaking, leadership, and how to talk to government officials. Your voice matters. But learning how to use it effectively? That's the game-changer. Start with the Public Speaking Masterclass.

  1. Join a community.
You don’t have to do this alone. YOUTHTOPIA’s changemaker program connects young people around the world who are figuring it out together. Strength in numbers.

The Bottom Line

World Environment Day isn’t about being perfect. It’s not about posting a green square and calling it a day. It’s about showing up — messy, hopeful, and ready to treat Earth like a home, not just a resource.

As Melati said on the TED stage and at the UN:

“We're at the most important tipping point in human history, and we do not have the luxury of time.”

So on June 5 — and honestly, every day after — ask yourself: Am I acting like this planet is where I plan to stay?

We already have the solutions. We have the passion. We have each other.

Now we just need the courage to act like it.

🌱 Stay curious. Stay loud. Stay a changemaker.
